Lottery goes under cover at Langwathby
Langwathby’s children were going for gold on Saturday 6 September at their annual sports day, with a helping hand from Pride in Penrith Lottery.
Thanks to a grant for £228 from the community lottery, the sports day organisers were able to buy five new gazebos so that they can run their events rain or shine, with more of a presence in the village.
“The gazebos also meant we were able to run a few food stalls, which has helped us to raise funds for future events,” said Tracey Sweeney from the Langwathby May Day Committee, which organised the event.
“Events like our sports day are a great way to get local children involved and bring the community together, as I’ve found for myself,” Tracey said. “I immigrated to Eden from Canada in the past few years and joining the May Day Committee has been a great way to meet other families.”
The successful sports day attracted around 60 children, who enjoyed pitting their skills against each other in a range of races (running, egg and spoon, sack and wheelbarrow), along with welly wanging and egg throwing. The overall winners were Archie Hale, aged 12, and Jessica Burne, aged 4, both from Langwathby.
The children’s families and residents from the village and beyond came together to cheer the athletes on and enjoy the sunshine.
The lottery chairman, Rob Udale, urged people to join the lottery so that it can continue to support local groups making a difference in the community.
“The Langwathby May Day Committee are contributing greatly to their area, making their community stronger, and it’s a real pleasure for Pride in Penrith Lottery to be able to help them thrive,” said Rob Udale, chairman of the lottery board.
It costs £2 a week to have a line in the lottery’s weekly draws, with free entry into special draws during the year.
“Our jackpot is heading towards its maximum of £5,000 next month and if we reach it one of our members is guaranteed to win the lot, so now’s a great time to join,” Rob said.
